The OMN and the Efficient Operation and Management IWA specialist group (EOM)
have developed many knowledge products that assist and guide practitioners in the
design, implementation and management of water supply and sanitation systems.
Although these documents have proven to be highly valuable, there remains a need
to update them with current experience and to identify the scope for future
documentation.
Therefore a scoping review was prepared to assess the status of existing documentation.
This was achieved by identifying the documents (guidelines, manuals, training package
and specific tools) of greatest strategic and operational significance. This literature
review was based on documents of the OMN, the EOM specialist group and relevant
documents produced by other individuals and organizations.
Subsequently, based on this review and an analysis of sector constraints a set of priority
requirements for effective and efficient O&M functioning was prepared.
The priority requirements are identified as:
- Promotion and advocacy
- Institutional and management aspects
- Monitoring of operation and maintenance
- Design
- Operational performance of urban systems
- Operational performance of rural systems
- Water safety plans
Under the knowledge available section you may find publications of both the OMN and
the EOM. Under knowledge needs we present the conclusion of our analysis which
categorises documents by those 'ready to use', 'need for further editing' and 'knowledge
gaps' that need to be filled.
